Jack Lee, Broadway Conductor
For Jean, With all my love and gratitude always. Jack (1974)
This is a letter about Jean Browne who was my associate conductor on the Broadway production of “Peter Pan” starring Sandy Duncan.
I had worked with Miss Browne for many years prior to 1979 and Peter Pan. She was my assistant every summer at the Dallas Summer Musicals. We did 4-5 shows every summer and ran them for 2 weeks each. Her functions for me were numerous.
All of the productions that we did were “star” packages which meant that there was an incredible amount of re-writing, re-orchestrating, re-arranging and several shows which we called paste jobs-meaning ”take a bar out of one number and put it in another number, but in a different key.” Sound simple! Not at all.
Miss Browne was not only on top of these situations but every orchestra book was cleaned for each player. Her ability to solve problems in a hurry is amazing and in the eight years that we worked together, she made my musical life easier by allowing me to do my creative work without my having to worry about “paper” things.
She's very industrious and cares about every little job she is doing, plus she has a great sense of humor and enjoys people.
Jean was most fortunate to have worked alongside Jack Lee on 15 productions. Jack was her mentor and close friend for 42 years until his passing in 2016.
